FAQs about Bifolding Shutters

Bifold shutters are a style of plantation shutter where multiple panels are hinged together, folding back on themselves to open up the full window. They concertina neatly back to the side.

This depends on the width of your window. Bifolding shutters can have as few as two panels or several more for wider windows. Because your shutters are made to measure, the number of panels is worked out based on your exact window dimensions to ensure the best proportions and a neat, seamless finish.

Either, it depends on your window width and personal preference. Narrower windows typically fold to one side, while wider windows often benefit from a split configuration where panels fold back to both sides, keeping the stack compact and giving you easy access to the full window. This is something we can help you decide when you place your order.

Our folding shutters start from as little as £182 per square metre, making them significantly more affordable than professionally installed alternatives, typically saving you up to 60%. Read our guide on what DIY shutters cost for more info.

A DIY Guide to Bi-Fold Shutters

French and patio doors are often the largest expanse of glass in a home, making them the biggest source of heat loss and privacy concerns. Blinds often rattle against the glass or interfere with handles. We offer two distinct DIY solutions to help you reclaim your space: our innovative No-Drill Perfect Fit range and our recommended Traditional Full Height Shutters.

No Drill Door Shutters: The Perfect Fit

If you have uPVC or aluminium doors with a rubber seal and want a "mess-free" installation, our Perfect Fit shutters are the ideal choice. They are specifically designed for modern doors where you want to maintain your warranty.

  • Clip-In Technology: These shutters use a clever bracket system that slides directly into the window bead of the door. No drilling, no screws, and zero damage to your frames.
  • Low Profile: Their slimline design ensures they move with the door, making them perfect for bi-fold doors that need to stack or fold.

Traditional Full Height Shutters: Our Top Recommendation

For a truly architectural, furniture-grade finish, we recommend Full Height shutters. These provide a seamless look that covers the entire expanse of your doors, offering the best thermal performance and style.

  • Fold-Back Versatility: When you want an undisturbed view of your garden or full access to your walkway, the panels fold back neatly to the side. They take up significantly less room than heavy, bunching curtains.
  • The "Summer Breeze" Effect: You can leave your French doors wide open for ventilation while keeping the shutter panels closed and slats tilted. This allows fresh air to circulate while maintaining total privacy and security.

Unsure if shutters will work for your doors?

We know that door handles, vents, and floor clearances can be tricky to navigate. You don’t have to figure it out alone. Our expert team is on hand to check your specific door setup. We highly recommend sending a photo of your doors to [email protected]; we can tell you exactly where the frame should sit to clear your handles and which style will work best for your space. We'll even mark up your photo so you know exactly where to measure.

Superior Insulation and Security

Regardless of the style you choose, shutters provide benefits that fabric window dressings cannot match:

  • Thermal Barrier: Large glass spans are notorious for heat loss. Our shutters act as a powerful insulating layer, keeping your room warm in winter and cool in summer.
  • Added Security: Shutters provide a robust, physical layer of protection. They act as a visible deterrent to intruders, offering more security than traditional rollers or blinds.
  • 10-Year Guarantee: Engineered for heavy-duty, daily use, our shutters are backed by a decade of protection, giving you peace of mind that your investment is built for the long term.
