How to Install Shutters to uPVC Windows

Installing wooden plantation shutters on your windows is one of the most stylish and contemporary home renovations you can do. Many homeowners worry that having uPVC windows means they can’t enjoy the benefits of shutters, but that isn't the case.

 

In fact, fitting shutters to uPVC windows is almost exactly the same as fitting them to wooden frames. There are just a few small details to keep in mind to ensure a perfect, professional finish.

What do you need to look out for?

The main thing to consider when installing shutters on uPVC is the "bite" of the screw. When you are screwing your shutter frame into the uPVC window frame, you will feel the screw start to grip. As soon as you feel that "bite," you should stop. Over-tightening can strip the thread in the plastic, so a gentle touch is key.

 

 

 

Handling window handles

Large, protruding handles are very common on uPVC windows. To ensure your shutter slats can tilt and open fully, you must leave enough space between the handle and the shutter frame.

 

If you have particularly large handles, you have two great options:

• Choose a smaller slat size: this requires less clearance to rotate.
• Opt for an Inside Mount frame: this positions the shutters further forward, providing ample space for both the slats and the handles.

 

What if my windows don’t have a recess?

Many uPVC windows, especially in modern homes or conservatory extensions, sit flush with the interior wall and don't have a traditional deep recess.

 

If your windows are in line with the wall, we recommend using a Non-Recessed frame. This frame style can be installed directly onto the window or the surrounding wall, making it a versatile choice for any uPVC setup, including sash-style uPVC windows.

Can I install shutters in my conservatory?

Absolutely! uPVC conservatories are ideal candidates for DIY shutters. If your conservatory is box-shaped (with windows at 90° angles), an In Recess frame is usually the perfect choice.

 

If your conservatory has angled windows (such as a 45° bay shape), you simply measure for each individual window. Just remember the golden rule: stop turning the screwdriver as soon as you feel that "bite" into the uPVC.
