How to Measure Shutters for a Non-Recessed Window

This guide is for windows without a recess, such as sash windows or windows that sit flush to the wall. Follow these steps to ensure accurate measurements and a perfect fit.

Do I have the right window for a Non-Recess frame?

A non-recess frame is fitted onto the window frame, architrave, or the wall around the window. You’ll need a flat surface for the frame to fix to.

The frame comes pre-drilled and is fixed directly onto this surface. All fixings are hidden behind a cover strip for a neat finish.

When choosing a non-recess frame, check your slat clearance. You may need to upgrade to a ‘Large’ frame. We explain this below.

Important: Non-recess frames are not available in our Essential Faux Wood range.

What tools do I need?

Step 1: Decide where your frame will sit

Fixing to the window frame: Measure the width and height from the outer edges of the frame, allowing enough space for the shutter frame to be fixed.

Fixing to the wall or architrave: Mark out where the frame will sit on each side of the window.

Important: Allow at least 38mm of space on each side for the frame.

Step 2: Measure the width

  1. Measure the width at three points across your chosen fixing area, making sure to include the 38mm space needed for each side of the frame.

  2. Use the smallest measurement when ordering.

  3. If your frame size is limited by architrave, deduct 4mm. This is the width you should use when ordering. If fixing onto a flat wall with no restrictions, no deduction is needed.

Step 4: Choose your frame depth

The right frame depth ensures your slats can tilt freely without hitting any obstructions.

Measure how far any obstructions (such as window handles) project out from the surface where the frame will be fitted (window frame, wall, or architrave).

Choose your frame based on your measurement:

  • 0–9mm: Standard frame, any slat size
  • 10–30mm: Large frame, any slat size
  • 31–40mm: Large frame, 64mm slats only
  • 40mm+: Contact us before ordering
